The Insider: Meet the Fund Manager sessions are a great way to hear directly from leading fund managers. They share their approach to investing, favourite companies and their market view for the year ahead.

The Insider: Meet the CEO sessions feature a selection of company leaders who provide a succinct overview of big things their companies are doing.

The past two years have presented a challenge for everyone, and for many the time in lockdowns has led to a reassessment of their priorities.

For some, this has meant a renewed desire to start or grow their family.

Monash IVF CEO Michael Knaap said the pandemic has been a catalyst for would-be parents to reconsider their career and travel ambitions and instead start trying for a child.

It is one of a number of factors Mr Knaap said has driven an uptick in demand for his company’s service in the past 12 months.

Monash IVF saw its adjusted net profits after tax (NPAT) tick up 61.5% to $23.3 million for the 2021 financial year, spurred on by a more than 36.6% increase in stimulated cycle patients and a 12.9% bump in ultrasound scans.

The age of parental aspirants is also increasing, Mr Knaap said, with many people now chasing other life goals and leaving child birth until later in life – something that has also created greater demand for fertility services.

And as maternal ages increase, advances in technology are also improving fertility clinics’ success rates and by extension the value proposition of these services.

“There were some really strong IVF industry fundamentals,” Mr Knaap said. “But within that, we also grew our market share to 21%.”

OC Funds Management portfolio manager Rob Calnon described Monash IVF as a “market leader” in the industry, and noted growth in demand for these services makes the company a “classic reopening trade”.

“The people who use Monash IVF fertility services certainly consider them essential,” Mr Calnon said.

“And the period they were closed down [due to COVID restrictions] really just drove pent-up demand for their services once they were able to be accessed.”

Mr Calnon added that COVID has also compressed the time frames for many would-be parents to start a family, and the renewed focus on the value of family following the pandemic places Monash IVF in good stead for the future.
