The Insider: Meet the CEO sessions feature a selection of company leaders who provide a succinct overview of big things their companies are doing.
During the height of Australia’s coronavirus lockdowns, millions of consumers turned to online shopping to purchase the goods they wanted without leaving their homes.
This spike in online shopping came as supply chains began to tremble under the weight of the pandemic, and delivery times stretched further and further out.
While these challenges created bottlenecks for consumers, they also created a market opportunity for technology company Zoom2u, according to Cyan Investment Management director Dean Fergie.
The company, which listed on the ASX in September last year, effectively operates a marketplace for consumers and corporate clients to find and connect with couriers and delivery drivers to enable same-day delivery on items ranging from envelopes to a full semi-trailer’s worth of freight.
“You can essentially think of it as Uber for delivery drivers,” Mr Fergie said.
“The growth in this space is astronomical; we’ve seen huge amounts of online sales happening, increasingly so because of COVID. Australia Post … is really dropping the ball in terms of being able to process these volumes, so a lot of that overflow is going to Zoom2u.”
Mr Fergie said these conditions created strong industry tailwinds to propel the business forward, adding that Zoom2u’s platform itself is also very scalable – further supporting expansion.
Already, the platform has more than 18,000 users and over 8600 registered drivers.
And since the company was launched in 2014, Zoom2u has made “well over two million deliveries”, CEO Steve Orenstein said.
With the delivery market currently in the midst of a period of extreme change, Mr Orenstein said Zoom2u is well-placed to keep growing its platform.
“We’re in a market today that’s really growing,” he said.
“I think we’re in the early days of seeing a shift that’s occurring for businesses that traditionally have used the Australia Posts of the world to do delivery, and the delivery has traditionally always been quite slow, to where companies are now looking to implement a faster delivery experience.”
