It’s a big week for lawsuits with corporate regulator ASIC suing ANZ over falsified credit card balances and actor Johnny Depp’s US$50 million defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard due to wrap up.
But there’s one other court case that has managed to capture global headlines without the voyeuristic appeal of celebrity or the public interest of banking regulation.
That case is the lawsuit filed by Sanjeev and Sadhana Prasad, who this week delivered their son an ultimatum: give us a grandchild in the next year, or face a US$650,000 lawsuit.
“They raised him, educated him, made him capable, made him a pilot – which was expensive,” said the Prasads’ lawyer, Arvind Srivastava.
“They see people in their neighbourhood playing with their grandchildren and feel like they should also have one.”
The Prasads said they financially supported their son (their only child) for years, forking out US$65,000 so he could train as a pilot in the US, buying him an US$80,000 sports car, and covering the cost of his wedding and honeymoon.
